Each chapter lists free and inexpensive materials, books, periodicals, associations, businesses, computer software, radio programs, videotapes, and mail-order catalogs related to the chapter topic. Appendixes provide informative annotations and addresses for companies and publishers mentioned in the main text, and list U.S. government bookstores, youth orchestras, children's museums and science and technology centers, zoos and aquariums, and national forests and parks. A detailed name index concludes the volume; subjects can be found through the table of contents.
This book is mainly a guide to resources; although sidebars provide information on such topics as determining when a child is ready to be left alone or selecting a restaurant for children, this type of information is better found in a book such as Franck and Brownstone's Parent's Desk Reference (Prentice Hall, 1991).
Written with the help of many contributors whose professional backgrounds match the chapter subjects, The Parents' Resource Almanac will be heavily used in all public libraries and in academic libraries supporting education programs, even those owning the other two titles cited here. It will also be useful as a circulating item.
